Pictured here in 1850, the Black Boy Inn was demolished in 1874 for road widening,
the pub gave the area its popular ( but not official ) name of Blackboy Hill. A
few years ago the nearby Elephant and Castle public house had its name changed to
the Blackboy Inn. The house behind with three upper storey windows is the Coach
& Horses in Highland Square, and the small gabled building at the right of this picture
was later a pub named the Retreat.
